Being Thankful

Why is the practice of being thankful so important in your spiritual walk with Christ? The following scriptures will help you to understand the vital role of thankfulness in your life.

  • Of Great Consequence

It is essential in your life with Christ. “It is good to give thanks to the Lord”      Psalm 92:1

It is God’s will for you. “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” I Thessalonians 5:18 and Ephesians 5:20

It is a spiritual quality in your life. “Be glad in the Lord, you righteous ones; and give thanks to His holy name” Psalm 97:12

  • A Form of Worship

It is how you come into the presence of the Lord. “Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving” Psalm 95:2

It is how the Lord is worshipped in heaven. “And all the angels were standing around the throne … and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, Amen, blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever.” Revelation 7:11-12

It is continuous before the throne. “And the four living creatures … day and night they do not cease to say Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come… give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne” Revelation 4:8-9

  • A Style of Prayer

It is how you call upon His name. “Oh give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name”  I Chronicles 16:8

It is how you share your requests with the Lord. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God” Philippians 4:6.

It is how Paul prayed for others. “For this reason I too … do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention of you in my prayers” Ephesians 1:15 & 16

It is an important part of your prayer life. “Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving” Colossians 4:2.

It is your midnight prayer. “At midnight I shall rise to give thanks to You”        Psalm 119:62

It is how you are to intercede. “First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men I Timothy 2:1

  • A Manner of Sacrifice

It is submission to the Lord. “Willingly I will sacrifice to You, I will give thanks to Your name, O Lord, for it is good” Psalm 54:6

It was how the Jewish priests presented an offering. “Now this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings which shall be presented to the Lord … if he offers it by way of thanksgiving” Leviticus 7:11 & 12

  • For a Chosen People

It was a chosen position before the Ark of the Covenant to minister to the Lord. “And with them were Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest who were chosen, who were designated by name, to give thanks to the Lord, because His loving kindness is everlasting”  I Chronicles 16:41

It is how the chosen of God act. “And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body and be thankful.  Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your heart to God” Colossians 3:15-16

It is a Levi example to you. “And they are to stand every morning to thank and to praise the Lord, and likewise at evening” I Chronicles 23:30

  • An Example For Us

Jesus gave thanks before He gave His life. “And when he had taken a cup and given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, drink from it, all of you; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins” Matthew 26:27-28

Jesus gave thanks before he performed a miracle. “He took the seven loaves and the fish; and giving thanks, He broke them and started giving them to the disciples, and the disciples in turn, to the multitudes” Matthew 15:36

“Jesus said to her, did I not say to you, if you believe, you will see the glory of God? And so they removed the stone. And Jesus raised His eyes, and said, Father, I thank You that You have heard me” John 11:41

  • Part of Our Inheritance

It is what we share. “giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.” Colossians 1:12

  • Is a Witness

It is a testimony to those around you. “But thanks be to God, who always leads us in His triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place.” II Corinthians 2:14

  • A Choice in Difficult Times

How to be thankful in hard times. Psalm 107

  • A Way to Dwell

It is how we stay in the Lord’s presence. “Surely the righteous will give thanks to Your name; the upright will dwell in Your presence.”             Psalm 14:13

  • A Warning

It is a caution, even for believers. “For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give thanks; but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heat was darkened.” Romans 1:21

“Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.”

Hebrews 13:15
